A few weeks ago I noticed my car (a 2005 Honda Civic) had passed 250,000 kms. I bought the car used in 2020, when it had a little under 190,000 kms. This got me thinking about tracking the kilometers over the years I've driven it. I'll take any opportunity to make a new spreadsheet.
My only data to work with is the emailed work receipts from whenever I've gotten an oil change. Luckily they include the odometer reading on those. A quick seach of my email archive gave me the data I needed, but with only a few points of data per year, the results are an unnaturally linear graph.
Since I normally take multiple ~1000 km round-trip drives to Vancouver and elsewhere every year, I know this chart is an innacurate smooth curve. Unfortunately, up until now I didn't have the foresight to keep track of my car's mileage before and after roadtrips. Below is a crude MS Paint edit showing what it what a more accurate chart would look like.
To get more out of the data, I extrapolated the approximate mileage for June of every year, since I bought the car in June 2020, and took the difference from each value to get an estimated annual increase (seen to the right). The ~8.3k average between 2022 and 2024 tells me the normal increase for my daily driving + a few annual roadtrips. The 2024-2025 jump is easily explainable by my in a long-distance relationship. But since we moved in together in mid 2025, the 2025-2026 value pretty clearly shows we didn't need to drive as much.
Anyways there's that. I thought this was a bit interesting, and a good first blog-type page for the site. I'm experimenting to see if short, dated pages on some little tidbits I want to share are a good idea.
